Finding My Niche

I emailed my friend and professor, Dr. David Stebenne in hopes he could give me a few numbers on where I stand at Ohio State University, where you do indeed feel like just a number sometimes.

He quickly reported back to me (he's a very organized and efficient fellow).

Hi Laura,

Current figures are about 36,000 undergrads overall, approximately 5,000 honors students, 652 history majors on the Columbus campus, about 80 of them in honors.

I'm glad to hear about your progress with the thesis. Please email an installment when you are ready.

Best,
D.S.

Instead of being in a sea of 36,000, I'm really one of eighty of those classy undergrad history scholars. Of those 80, I maybe know 25 through associations such as the Dean's Student Advisory Group, Phi Alpha Theta (History Honorary), and the Honors Thesis Seminar class (led by Dr. Stebenne). I know of only one other (a junior) who is interested in classical archaeology as a career.

It's been tough to stick out in this crowd but these numbers show that I'm pretty unique. About 12 of my fellow history honors students are working on outstanding senior theses. I am happy to report that mine stands out since I am working on my own set of publishable data and conducted my own field research. I wonder if Karen Holbrook, president of this university, realizes that I'm one of those students who adheres to our really lame school slogan: "Do Something Great."

I am also happy to report that I am now a Flippery Fish in the blogosphere ecosystem!
